6 Minute Walk
What is the Six-Minute Walk Test?
The Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) is a simple yet effective clinical tool used to evaluate your lung function, endurance, and response to pulmonary therapy. Commonly performed at the start of a Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program in Nashik, or during the evaluation process for lung transplant, this test helps healthcare providers tailor a personalized exercise plan suited to your respiratory condition and physical limitations.
Purpose of the 6-Minute Walk Test
The main goal of this test is to measure the distance you can walk on a flat surface in a duration of six minutes. You will walk back and forth in a straight corridor or hallway. While the test is straightforward, it is designed to challenge your breathing and endurance, making it a valuable indicator of your pulmonary capacity and exercise tolerance.
You are encouraged to walk as far as possible in the six minutes.
You can slow down, stop, or rest as needed during the test.
Resting is allowed (e.g., leaning against a wall), but you should resume walking once you feel ready.
The test is self-paced and reflects your real-world walking capacity.
How to Prepare for the Six-Minute Walk Test
Before undergoing the 6MWT at our Pulmonary Clinic in Nashik, please follow these preparation guidelines:
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
Choose walking shoes or sports shoes that provide good support (e.g., tennis shoes).
If you use walking aids (e.g., cane, walker), bring them along; you may use them during the test.
Take your prescribed medications as usual unless told otherwise by your physician.
You may eat a light meal if the test is scheduled for early morning or afternoon.
Avoid vigorous physical activity within 2 hours of the test.
What Happens During the 6MWT?
During the test, you will be introduced to the Modified Borg Scale — a numerical system used to rate your level of breathlessness and fatigue throughout the activity.
Modified Borg Scale
Score | Breathlessness Level |
---|---|
0 | No Breathlessness / Nothing at all |
0.5 | Very Very Slight (Just Noticeable) |
1 | Very Slight |
2 | Slight Breathlessness |
3 | Moderate |
4 | Somewhat Severe |
5 | Severe Breathlessness |
6 | – |
7 | Very Severe Breathlessness |
8 | – |
9 | Very Very Severe Breathlessness |
10 | Maximum Breathlessness |
You will be asked to rate your breathlessness and fatigue before, during, and after your walk using this scale.
During the Test
If you require supplemental oxygen, you may carry or push your oxygen tank during the test.
You may use a cane or walker, but assistance from another person is not allowed during the walk.
You will be closely monitored for safety and vital signs.
Parameters Monitored
Blood Pressure
Heart Rate
Respiratory Rate
Oxygen Saturation (SpO₂) using pulse oximetry at rest and during walking
These readings will help evaluate your response to exertion and determine the severity of any underlying respiratory conditions such as COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, or heart failure.
